
AirPods Roadmap: No Major Updates Until 2026, Lighter AirPods Max May Arrive in 2027

According to trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is unlikely to release any major updates to its AirPods lineup until 2026. This confirms earlier reports that the next generation of AirPods is expected to introduce infrared (IR) camera technology, which could unlock new features related to spatial awareness and environmental interaction.
Kuo also notes that mass production for these camera-equipped AirPods is still on track for 2026. These models may include a new chip — reportedly codenamed “Glennie” — that could drive advanced spatial audio experiences or even enable gesture-based control in tandem with Apple Vision Pro.
Redesigned AirPods Max Expected in 2027
Kuo also shared a new timeline for Apple’s over-ear headphones. A lighter version of the AirPods Max is now expected to enter mass production in 2027. While there’s no word yet on whether it’ll feature design changes beyond reduced weight, this update could make AirPods Max more comfortable for extended wear — a key complaint about the current version.
It’s possible Apple could also enhance performance with improved battery life, new sensors, or additional Apple Intelligence integrations.

Although the next generation is still years away, Apple recently gave the AirPods Max a modest boost by adding a USB-C port. This change allows for lossless audio and ultra-low latency, making the headphones more future-proof for high-end audio and gaming applications.
Currently, the USB-C AirPods Max are on sale for $479.99 (regularly $549), making it a good time to buy if you're not planning to wait for the 2027 model.
